Exercise for the aging population? Yes, it's highly beneficial! Exercise has been shown to:

  • Prevent disease

  • Lower risk of falls

  • Improve your mental health;

  • Promote social ties;

  • Improve cognitive function.

But what exercises should this demographic do? That depends entirely on the person exercising! Many individuals in their 50s and up are taking high energy dance classes, participating in TRX and weight training classes and running marathons. It depends on how active you are and have been during your life. However, it is never too late to start exercising. A study at the University of Birmingham showed that "Older people who have never taken part in sustained exercise programs have the same ability to build muscle mass as highly trained master athletes of a similar age, according to new research."


Some examples of important training for new exercisers in the older demographic are:

  • Weight or strength training to help build muscle mass

  • Cardio dance classes

  • Swimming

  • Bicycle riding

  • Walking

  • Gardening

Fit Chix offers many classes that can benefit this demographic: Barre, Line Dancing, Speedball, Piyo, Cardio Chix, Piloxing, Zumba, Pound. All can be modified or done seated in a chair. Also in the works is an adult Silver Sneakers Classic class at Fit Chix. It is never too late to start exercising or to feel young while doing it! Always check with your physican before exercising.

We are fortunate to live in a country where we are free. Free to make choices . . Religion, politics, jobs, schooling, raising children, how we lead our lives. We are Free to be fit as well! In the manner we choose.

Many fitness students join the gym on a new year resolution and are often gone by spring. The main reason . . Failure to see immediate results—we begin to lose motivation and purpose. We need to remember that we are still doing our bodies a huge favor by exercising and perhaps our fitness goals should be adjusted.


Remember Fitness can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. All bodies are different. Being a size 2 isn’t the end all to being fit. The Chix come in all ages, body types and fitness levels. Some start young. Others later in life. They want the same thing. The freedom to be fit.



Fit to be free from health issues and to get off medications.

Fit to be free to lower cholesterol.

Freedom to walk and climb steps without being winded.

Freedom to play with children and grandchildren.

Freedom to boost mental health.

Freedom to participate in high energy classes and keep up with the younger group at an age their grandmothers would have never dreamed of.

Freedom to feel and act young.

Freedom to be fit to lead your best life . . . and yes run a marathon and lose weight if you choose.



You don’t have to have a Barbie doll body to be fit. You are Free to be fit as the perfect you that you are. We are Free to be Chix. So Let freedom ring Chix!!!! 7/2021 SS
